Hidro-Sogamoso Hydroelectric project

VQ in association with Integral Ingenieros Consultores (http ://www.integral.es.com/es/ ), provided supervision services for the construction and startup of the Hidro-Sogamoso Hydroelectric Project. The Project installed capacity was designed to be 820 MW, with and average capacity of 5,053 kWh per year. Supervision was provided for the following components of the project:
- Two diversion tunnels with 11 m high curved walls and a 5.65 m radius semicircular dome. Length of diversion tunnels were 860 m and 830 m respectively.
- A 100,000 m3 volume cofferdam with a height of 16 m.
- 72 m width spillway with a 354 m long channel with variable slopes from 8.2% to 53.6% and a variable height walls from 10 to 13 m. Four radial gates 15 m width and 20m height controlled the flow rates.
- Grout curtain with depths ranging from 40 m to 120 m.
- Two diversion tunnels with 11 m high curved walls and a 5.65 m radius semicircular dome. Length of diversion tunnels were 860 m and 830 m respectively.

- Concrete barrier intended to control seepage through the dam abutments. The barrier construction comprised excavation and concrete filling in successive horizontal galleries in both dam abutments with varying depths from 30 m to 50 m.
- Underground powerhouse comprising machinery, transformers and oscillation underground cavems. The machinery cavem design dimensions were 24 m width, 142 m length and 50,13 m height; transformers cavem dimensions were 119 m long, 14 m wide and 17.5 m high; and the oscillation cavem with a horseshoe shape dimensions of 24 base; 50,13 m height and a 142 m length.The powerhouse comprised of three Francis turbine generating units, vertical axis, with a nominal flow of 210 m³/s, nominal net fall of 145.53 m and rated power of 273 MW.

The tunnel started at the end of the transition and developed with a horseshoe section of straight walls with 13 m base and 16 m height and reverse slope of 3.55%. The approximate length to the tunnel portal by the Sogamoso River was 218 m.
